I really really want to go to USC. What are my chances?
nicole asked:
I am a very ambitious student, and very involved in my school, such as leadership, clubs, community and sports. I am also an avid writer and take AP classes. ( I passed my history with a three) My g.p.a. isn’t perfect; a 3.7 weighted, and I will have at least a 1800 on my SAT’s (hopefully) lol. I want to major in film as a script writer. So, is this good enough? What else should I be doing to increase my chances?

Sorry, keep lots of options open. They are a private university and they can pick and choose who they want (e.g., GPA of 4+).
Make sure you nail the SAT and increase the GPA.
While USC has a history of taking just about anyone with money, they are no longer in that category. According to their profile on, 90% of admittees had GPAs over 3.75, and the middle 50% had SAT scores between 1920 and 2180. That of course doesn’t mean that there aren’t some that are lower; the problem is that anything related to film is about the most competitive area they have, so I would imagine that you would have to be at the top, not the bottom, of the range to get in there. Ambition is a good thing as long as your performance keeps up with it. When it outruns performance, it leads to immense frustration. You may need to focus on fewer things so that you can do them better.
Check the schools website, and also check with the Admissions Office. Plus, it won’t do you any harm to apply anyway.
Good luck.
