A career in law or in writing?
Nooneyouknow asked:
I’m really good at writing–at least that is what all my teachers and fellow students always told me. I was even on the newspaper staff, but found the writing too recipe like. Anyway, right now I am considering writing as in fiction or studying to be a lawyer. Would the writing I would do in law be recipe like as well? I like helping people and reasearching as in for writing reasearch papers and reading so writing is not my ONLY thing. I like being around people and am also comfortable being alone. I’ve had time to work on my writing as an fiction writer, but I have yet to finish anything. The law interests me and I have always been the one to stand up for things and people rights etc. My journalism teacher pegged me for advanced classes while I was in his class and after I wrote a letter to the editor dealing with a club not being fair to all students. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

You could actually do both. You could do writing gigs while working your way to become a lawyer. Even if you are already a lawyer, you could have a regular column at some magazine. You could even discuss law if you like.

I think you should go for a layer. It seems like you would be good at it. And if not you can always write the fiction!
I agree with the first answer, tons and tons of writers have jobs besides writing. Terry Brooks (fantasy fiction writer) practiced law while he was writing the Shannara series. It wasn’t until after he had three published novels that he gave up his law practice. But many writers never give up their “day job.” Only a handful of writers truly have enough success to only writing. If your good at organizing your time and writing is a priority, you’ll be able to do both. It’s a great way to get a bit of extra income too!
My friend is an attorney and a lot of law writing is boiler plate stuff, boring really until you get to be a judge and write opinions.
Follow your heart. It sounds like God gave you a gift as a writer to use in either field, but picture yourself at a fork in the road. Down the left is law. To your right is writing. Which path brings you the most peace when you think about it? I’m guessing that’s your answer if one brings you more peaceful thoughts than the other.
