What books are the best at inciting the imagination to its highest levels of sensation?
Mohsin K asked:
I have fantasy novels in particular on my mind when i ask this question (though its not necessary). From the modern Diana Wynne Jones (who wrote “Howl’s Moving Castle”) to the old Shakespeare, from the testosterone-fueled battlefields of Fight Club (by Chuck Palahnuik) and Illiad, to even the heart-wrenching romance novels (which i am too ignorant of to even mention) - what is out there that best takes the human imagination to its peak plane, to its highest sensations of intoxication and euphoria? What can give me this zen, this ascending to a higher plane? Perhaps a book that combines many aspects - mystery, action, romance, etc. In my own opinion, a book like this is firstly founded on a sublime plot or vision of the writer and only secondarily strengthened and vitalized by a talented writer. Thus it is not necessarily a “literary” novel, yet i would guess the mind that conjures such great plots would likely be that of a great writer and thus more likely in the literary novel field.

CARL SAGANS-COSMOS
Try “A Clockwork Orange” and the decalogue known as The Thomas Covenant Series. Thomas Covenent the White Gold Weilder by Stephen R. Donaldson.
Having said that, it really is up to personal taste.
Good luck pursuing utopia.
Stephenie Meyer’s book Twilight.
Hp Lovecraft, Robert E howard, and Edgar Rice Burroughs are all very good and HIGHLY imaginative………….add Edgar A Poe in there too
I would also suggest Lovecraft. He has an imagination that has no parallel.
I also found Dan Simmons “Hyperion” to be both literary and imaginative (his style mimics “Canterbury Tales in format) and incorporates mystery, action, horror, love, politics, and futuristic society in one novel.
Good luck
Two wonderful fantasy novel that need to be read by everyone, even non fantasy lovers are Little, Big by John Crowley, and Jonathan Strange, Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke.
