How likely is it for someone to ACTUALLY make a decent living as a writer?

How likely is it for someone to ACTUALLY make a livabe decent income as a writer?
How long does it take?
Do you HAVE to have a publishing agent?
Is there any special schooling required?
Do you have to pay anything to get started?
And how do you even get there anyway?

I want to write beauty & wellness articles for magazines but probably not be tied to just one title. And novels like Babysitters Club kind of thing.

    Not many writers are able to make a complete living off their writing unless they are a journalist or something similar. If you’re thinking on publishing book length works than a literary agent is a must and most authors attend college under an English major.

    Making a living as a professional writer is about as likely as being a professional actor or athlete. Of course, some make it there. But most of us do not. That does not mean that you are not talented…….

    Writing novels and writing non-fiction articles for magazines have different qualifications.

    To write a novel, you don’t need any qualifications. You write the book, try to get an agent. An agent will try to sell the work to a publishing house and negotiate a contract. An agent is not required, but many of the big publishing houses do not take direct submissions, plus they can negotiate a better deal than you can probably. The chances of getting published are slim and 7% of books published are responsible for 87% of sales. This means that even if you get published, you are unlikely to make money. So while I think pursuing writing a novel is a worthy goal, you should not depend on that to make a living.

    To write for a magazine, you will likely need credentials on the subject. In other words, you probably need some education that proves that you are an expert in beauty & wellness, or else you can try journalism school.
